A Korean Coffee Place called Tom N Toms

In the 80’s, there was a place called Far East Plaza. It has a nostalgic feel for me as it was the top hang out place for kids like me, after school. It was the place we were not supposed to hang out at. Teenaged girls in school uniforms like blue pinafores and white shoes sprawled all over. It was when burger joint McDonald’s was brand new in Singapore and had the amazingly good strawberry milkshake on the menu made with real ice cream not the sugary stuff they have today. Far East Plaza still looks about the same, but now there’s no more McDonald’s. Instead there’s a new Korean coffee joint I’ve been meaning to try.

Finally a place that sells real pretzels like the ones I had in New York. I had the original ones. They were so fresh that you could see the steam rising from it.

The coffee is a bit like Starbucks but seems more bitter. I personally prefer Tully’s Coffee which does not have that bitterness.

The part I liked about this place is an electronic device that’s used so you don’t have to stand around and wait for your coffee or bites. Instead you can go take a seat and the device will light up when your order is ready for collection at the counter. I have seen this used at Korean food outlets but this is the first time in a coffee place. I think it’s a great idea.

The place seems to be owned by a well-heeled Korean American lady and I really like the decor here. It’s cosy and a nice change from Starbucks. Part of the coziness is because you need to walk down to this place from the ground level.

There were other items like huge toasted bread with peanut butter honey and whipped cream, but they looked a bit too much on the cloyingly sweet side. The kind that would put you into a sugar coma.

Looks like a very nice place. A change for once instead of the usual suspects. I think there is another branch near Tanjong Pagar. It’s 24hrs…

I haven’t been there before. Didn’t realize that it’s a food hub now. Always thought it was just part of a condo.

The icon village you mean, I think it’s still half empty but there are a few restaurants there. How nice to be able to wake up and crawl downstairs to have your coffee. How are NY pretzels like. Anything like Auntie Anne’s in Singapore? Those are the only pretzels I’ve tried.

Auntie Annie’s pretzels are softer and more dessert like. They are yummy, but different. Not like the ones in NY. Those are triple the size, chewy and fresh with a bit of salt added.

Have been there last weekend. Worthy of a try, and provides quite a good alternative to the other coffee places. Only thing it has fierce competition right next door.
