The black herbal jelly called Gwei Ling Go, meaning tortise jelly, is bitter, so you need to add a bit of honey. Even then it retains a bitter aftertaste. It’s Cantonese in origin and you can find a lot of these stalls in Hong Kong. I believe that it retains the name, but my friends tell me that in Singapore, lots of herbs rather than the tortoise-shell is used to make this. I knew someone from Hong Kong, who claimed that eating this will make the ants run down your cheeks. I guess it’s a literal translation from Cantonese, meaning that your complexion or skin will be so smooth, that ants will fall off it. Anyway that description has always stuck in my mind because it was truly weird and unique.

It is served chilled from the fridge and has a refreshing peppermint taste. It costs $5 Singapore dollars which is double the price of the typical chinese dessert.

The jelly is made in the big cauldran while the extremely bitter but good for you, herbal teas are prepared in the smaller ones.

The shop is Hoong Woh Tong and I marvelled that the decor is so authentic and ornate with all the red and gold.

You can also choose to buy the herbal teas. They are good for curing a sore throat or cooling your system down if it has too much heat in it. Think of your body as an overheated car.

You are the biggest, most wonderful proponent of your wonderful country and you’d be so successful! You already are in my opinion. I’ve honestly added “visit Singapore” to my list of things to do in this lifetime and I never would have known about all the incredible things Singapore has to offer if it wasn’t for YOU. I have a very small list of things to do too…
