An Old Shophouse Painted Canary Yellow

These shophouses at Pickering Street, as old as 70 years, have been preserved and all their external facade needed was a fresh coat of paint. I was struck by the awesome canary yellow of one of the shophouses. It stood out among the row of shophouses painted in pastel shades. I absolutely adore sunny yellow on buildings. Here it makes a  striking contrast against its red roof and our blue skies.

It’s lovely to see old and new Singapore intertwined – the restored low-rise shophouses among the glass and steel skyscrapers. This is an area where a lot banks, investment firms and insurance companies have their offices because these are the few companies that can afford the high rental here.  There are also a number of fancy restaurants and pubs here and the place probably comes alive at night.  I prefer going on the weekends when you get a bit of peace and quiet.  It’s so quiet that if you wanted to you could actually find a seat and meditate.  I kid you not.

The contrasting shades of the units seems like art come to life.

The dark brown window shutters look sophisticated against the white of the shophouses here. The green glazed overlapping chinese roof tiles have also been preserved.  The building now houses an investment firm.
