Meidi-ya: Pretty Food at the Japanese Supermarket

The products at the gourmet Japanese Supermarket, Meidi-ya are very expensive compared to our subsidized supermarkets like NTUC. But walking the aisles here is an experience in itself.  The Japanese do things so well. They pay such attention to minute details and presentation.  Their packaging are works of art!  That’s why it is so relaxing to browse the produce air flown from various parts of Japan.  It feels like I am walking through an art museum of some sort.  Even the eggs are gorgeous.  The sushi can make you swoon!

I did some research and found out that MEIDI-YA was established in 1885.  I didn’t realize that it was that established. The motto of the chain is “the Highest Quality for Everyone Everytime”.  The motto of the Singapore branch is “More than Just Freshness” which is a cool motto to have.

There’s even a place for super adorable little Japanese kids to watch their Japanese cartoons. Their parents get in on the fun too. It’s all nicely contained within the drinks section.

We couldn’t resist trying a packet of the air-flown Morinaga milk.  It was sweet and fresh but not very far from the quality of Meiji Milk which you can get a whole carton of for the same price at our subsidized supermarket NTUC. (about $2 Singapore dollars)
