This fruit is not related to the mango as its name might suggest.

You break these by applying pressure on the sides and the soft rind easily cracks open. Your palms get stained a wonderful purple. The fruit inside feels slippery and has a delightful sourish sweet sort of tangy taste.

  2. bookjunkie says:

I prefer tropical fruits over temperate ones anyday 🙂 Must be the loads of sugar in them

  3. 365days2play says:

I love mangosteens. What are the temperate fruits? Strawberries, oranges and apples?

  4. bookjunkie says:

yeah, am bored with apples, pears, plums, berries though they are healthier.

  5. bookjunkie says:

from wiki: Fruits of temperate climates are almost always borne on trees or woody shrubs or lianas. They will not grow adequately in the tropics, as they need a period of cold (a chilling requirement) each year before they will flower. The apple, pear, cherry, and plum are the most widely grown and eaten, owing to their adaptability.

  6. One interesting fact about the mangosteen.. how many “pieces” of flesh you get inside can be actually known by just looking at the flower-like bottom of the mangosteen. Cool ya?

  7. bookjunkie says:

Hey Ody…nice to see you here again. I have never tried Langka or maricopa. Are they only found in the Philippines? Would love to try them!

  12. Ody says:

Langka = jackfruit and I meant macopa which is called mountain apple.
