I Miss Old Fashioned Cream Cakes

I was craving for an old fashioned cream cake, but the one sold at Toast Box was quite a disappointment.  It looked promising, but turned out to be not at all like the jellied butter cream cakes sold by the seller who went by in a cake van in the 70’s.  Till this day there are no local cakes that can beat what was sold in that yellow van which used to swing by every afternoon at 5pm. Each time as the cake seller tooted his horn, our grandmother would fish several coins from a knot in her white sari which she generously gave us for more cakes than we could eat or our tiny hands could hold. I guess these cakes have a sentimental connection as they remind me of my grandma who always had the scent of baby powder about her. I guess it was because she looked after so many of her grandkids when they were still in diapers and the baby scent enveloped her. She was also a very strong woman who was the glue in the family who held everything and everyone together.

I have no sense of direction and poor conceptual skills, but I’m lucky that my memory is pretty good. Part of why I am blogging is to keep a record of my memories while I still can, in case my mind fails me one day.

Toast Box has a pretty attractive set-up, but I am often disappointed by the products. I tried the laksa and I decided never again. It had worm like noodles which I didn’t like. I should have taken a photo, but I forgot. To be fair the coffee was ok. We went to the branch at Hougang Mall which is in the Northeast of Singapore.
