AOBA Hokkaido Ramen (ION)

When I’m at ION I am always at a lost as to what to have for lunch.  That’s the problem with a myriad of choices but wanting to keep to a budget as well.  Usually we then head to AOBA for Hokkaido Ramen.  It’s not the best Ramen in my opinion as the chicken ramen by Marutama at Liang Court has forever won my heart and taste buds, but B quite likes it.  I must admit that the texture of the noodles is pretty good – chewy and dense, but the accompanying boiled egg and soup is just average.

B says the branch at Tampines 1 has better tasting soup. He feels that there is no consistency. I have to agree with the no consistency bit in terms of service as well.  The Philippino wait staff at ION are warm and welcoming while the staff at the VivoCity branch seemed rude the last time we went.  Since they ignored us we chose not to have our meal there in the end.

I must admit the decor at this branch at ION is really nice, with the japanese words on the crates which are used as lamp shades are well as part of the counter decor.  I really need to stop making repeat visits to the same place and explore more places at ION, but I have a feeling I might be returning here as it is not too crowded and it’s relatively easy to get a seat if you go before Noon on a weekend.

We both had the Shoyu Ramen which was $11 Singapore dollars, the cheapest item on the menu.  You get free flow of ice water, so that’s great.  With the Citibank offer we also got homemade Gyoza as well, which was ok, but a tad oily.  B found it awful.  I would take his word over mine,  as he is a fan of Gyoza and knows what a well made one is supposed to taste like.

My final verdict is this branch at ION has lovely woody decor, which is always a winner, warm service and the noodle texture is nice and dense.

I too prefer Marutama. I thought Aoba was so so. I prefer the springy noodles of Marutama. Ippudo at Mandarin Gallery is not bad too. When you add a whole spoonful of crushed garlic, it is pain and pleasure in 1 mouthful!

Ion is currently still my favourite mall.
