How Do You Read in Bed?

An article about reading positions at Huffington Post intrigued me. I used to read with pillows propped up, converting the bed into a chair and reading upright when I was younger. Now I found the most comfortable position for me is flat on my tummy propped up by my arms with my book on a pillow. I have never read on my back or side. Those positions look uncomfortable to me. Reading on my back seems bad for my eyes too.

Reading in bed is the ultimate luxury to me. How do you read? Please let me know in the comments. I’m super curious about how odd or common my preference is.

Position A: Sitting upright, propped up by pillows

Position B: Flat on your tummy propped up by your arms (my favourite style)

Position C: Flat on your back. I was excited to find this picture of Marilyn Monroe’s reading style.

Position D: On your side. I think this might give me a shoulder ache. Although I think expectant mums might be more comfortable reading this way.

I’m definitely a Marilyn Monroe then! Hehehe. Can’t for the life of me lie on my tummy propped up by my arms for more than 5 minutes. I get a tremendous neckache, and my orthopedic doc says it’s bad for the back.

I’m a position C for the same reasons as 365…when I lay on my stomach, my neck hurts like hell and so do my shoulders and low back. I’m in that position now, with my laptop propped on a bent leg!

These days, though, I probably read most using my Kindle app on my iPhone. I also have a Kindle, but it’s big to cart around each day and takes a minute or two to boot up. I always have my phone handy so I can read a page or two as I’m waiting for an elevator, while I watch E play in the fountains at Vivo, what have you. I also like that that it’s backlit so I can read in bed without disturbing Ravi.

However, I recently read most of a book oldschool–the paperback in my hands and it was a nice change (I read the rest on my phone).

I’ve tried reading on my friends iPad but when it really comes down to it I prefer a good old paperback 🙂 thanks for sharing ….now I’ve got 2 ladies who read Monroe style 🙂

I have tried all positions and my fav varies with mood. My current position is D, works for me 🙂

Quite interesting, this. I find it much more comfortable to prop up against my pillows, converting it in to a chair-like state. I struggle to read whilst I lay down, but I think that’s mainly due to the fact I always become incredibly tired reading that way.

thanks so much! 🙂 that used to be one of my ways too…but I ended up feeling more comfortable propping up on my arms (after many hours my arms ache too) as my bed’s headboard wasn’t conducive being metal bars and I didn’t have enough pillows.
