Glee’s GQ Photoshoot Will Make You A Little Uncomfortable

Update 21 October 2010:  Dianna Agron Responds to Criticism

“If you are hurt or these photos make you uncomfortable, it was never our intention,” she wrote. “And if your 8-year-old has a copy of our GQ cover in hand, again I am sorry. But I would have to ask, how on Earth did it get there?”

“I am 24-years-old. I have been a pretty tame and easy-going girl all my life. Nobody is perfect, and these photos do not represent who I am… For GQ, they asked us to play heightened versions of our school characters. A ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ version. At the time it wasn’t my favourite idea, but I did not walk away.

“I must say, I am trying to live my life with a Sharpie marker approach. You can’t erase the strokes you’ve made, but each step is much bolder and more deliberate. I’m moving forward from this one and, after today, putting it to rest. I am only myself, I can only be me.”

What I wrote earlier: I know they are older in real life than the school kids they play on Glee (both Lea and Dianna are 24 while Corey is 28), but I couldn’t help feeling shocked that the Director of the Glee allowed them to go ahead with the sexy shoot that makes Britney in her school girl outfit seem tame. I wonder what parents of kids who watch the show will think? I for one can’t separate Rachel Berry from Lea Michele and when I see this shoot I see the underaged Rachel Berry character dressed in way too little.

Even though they are totally being objectified (note that the guy, Cory remains fully clothed), the girls sure do look great though. Lea Michele and Dianna Agron are petite and Asian size, but the shoot makes them look inches taller.

But I just have to say, I think Lea Michele is beautiful and I love her nose. It’s great that she did not get a nose job in spite of the pressure. Just look at what happened to Jennifer Grey (Baby in Dirty Dancing) – she became totally unrecognizable after her nose job. She was so much prettier before the plastic surgeons wrecked her unique face:

“I was one of the only girls in my high school that didn’t get one,” she explains. “And if anybody needed it, I probably did.”

“But my mom always told me, ‘Barbra Streisand didn’t get a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’ And I didn’t,” she added. “F–k those people.”

On the other hand, maybe the show realizes that it appeals to adults as well. I love it for it’s themes of diversity and of course the music. Show choir makes everything sound so great. It surprises me when I actually like the Glee cover versions better than the originals! That’s scandalous.

More eyebrow raising shots from the Terry Richardson Glee Gone Wild shoot.

Ugh this really pisses me off, so I’m glad I’m not the only one. On a side note, I think you’d really like this rockin’ feminista blog: http://jezebel.com/

Technically Glee isn’t a kids show (it’s a lot darker with more mature content), although a lot of tweens/teens love it.

My problem is not really with the sexy outfits and poses of Lea Michele and Dianna Agron because it’s almost a matter of course for young, attractive female celebrities. Of course that’s objectifying and totally anti-feminist but it’s not something that’s about to change, I guess.

The main problem as I can see it is the context of the shoot. By putting the girls in a high school setting, they’re clearly trying to draw a connection to the show, while still casting the girls in more “adult” roles by having them so scantily-clad. So it just seems… incongruous to me. It’s two concepts that aren’t really gelling that well.

I have no problem with either of them in sexy shoots (eg. http://www.leamichele.org/gallery/Photoshoots/Set%20010/image/650/003.jpg) as long as they are out of context of the high school setting of Glee, because then it’s easier to see them as separate. But trying to mesh the two together doesn’t work that well.

That said, if it weren’t for the context of Glee and they were just 2 models in a school shoot, it’s not that bad a shoot. (I really don’t like that first photo of Michele, though.)

Poor girl! I wonder how they were put up to do this. Jeez.
