Tim Burton’s Staring Girl Must Be Singaporean

I Love all of Tim Burton’s characters, especially the ones he created in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories.

Of these the Staring Girl instantly captivated me.

I once knew a girl
who would just stand there and stare.
At anyone or anything,
she seemed not to care…..

She’d stare at you for hours,
and you’d never know why.

She sounds very much like Singaporean ‘Aunties’ and ‘Uncles’ who love to stare. It’s quite a hobby in Singapore. If you’ve been here long enough, you’ll get the joke and sarcasm. Or maybe you’ve been here so long, you’re so used to it, you hardly notice that you’re a star attraction.

What I really like to do is suddenly stop in a public place and start staring really intently at something. After a little while a small group of kaypohs will form behind me trying to figure out what it is that’s so exciting. And then I’ll just walk away.

    Hah suckers.
