T.G.I. FRiDAY’S Is Back in Singapore

My favourite food is turning out to be American. I’m not so into pasta but I seem to have a constant craving for burgers and ribs. That’s why I always look forward to a meal at an authentic American Casual Dining Restaurant.

I missed a lot of chains that went away like Chilli’s and Friday’s, but now they are back, with Chilli’s at Tanglin Mall and Sentosa, and Friday’s at The Heeren.

I still miss the old T.G.I FRiDAY’S which was located in it’s very own glass building with a big jumbled LOVE sign in front of it. It was next to Park Mall, an upmarket furniture place. I recall one celebration after work with friends, when I was in my sweet twenties, which seems like a lifetime ago. I was scared out of my wits by the FRiDAY’S gorilla when it bounded right up to me and tried to hug me. I am painfully shy, but it turned out to be quite fun because it was so memorable and made my companions laugh. The guy in that suit must have been like 6 feet tall, because that gorilla was really huge and seemed so real and intimidating! Definitely scary for little kids.

At the newly relaunched Friday’s at Heeren, the open air concept didn’t appeal to me. With the haze it would have felt like sitting in a place where people have been chain smoking. Well, it’s probably not that bad, but my throat feels scratchy right now, so I feel like exaggerating. Instead we chose the air-conditioned indoors area inside Heeren, which was a little squeezy. Actually it just felt that way because I keep comparing it to the old place at Park Mall, where space seemed more generous especially with glass walls and ceilings.

I was hoping for more Halloween decorations, but there were only the green cobwebs. There is a Halloween Contest on the 31st though and I hope someone goes and posts pictures on their blog. That should be fun.

I loved the pulled pork tacos which is making me drool again just thinking about it. The taco was really nice and soft and the pulled pork, bursting with flavour and delicious. The buffalo bites (deboned sourish chicken nuggets) were so good with the sour cream. I would definitely have those two items again and I would want to try their Jack Daniel’s Ribs as well.

I regret my choice of dessert (I tend to always need something sweet at the end of a meal), although I found it extremely cheap at S$3.90 for a choice of three out of five variations. I chose Oreo Choc Mint, Strawberry Parfait and Snickers Treat. It was just S$1.60 for one, but I was greedy. It didn’t appeal to me as I don’t really like overly sweet chocolate mousse (it was supposed to be custard). I just ate mostly the toppings which was snickers bars and oreos.

The people who served us were friendly especially a very cheerful Malay boy who served us.

This was the ‘damage’ as my uncle likes to put it – almost S$40 with taxes:

Boneless Bites -S$9.80
Pulled Pork Tacos – S$18.90
Dessert Mini x3 – S$3.90

If you haven’t tried it yet, the Strawberry Lemonade Freeze is DIVINE. American lemonade isn’t aerated, so the only two places I’ve been able to get a good “American” strawberry lemonade are Fridays and Chilis…when we went there for Ravi’s birthday, we each ended up ordering 5 of the lemonades each (and they’re like 6 bucks apiece…probably still cheaper than a bottle of wine, though)!

We like the indoor seating, too because we’re wimps and strongly prefer places with air con.

What’s the Friday’s gorilla? I’ve been eating at Fridays for over 10 years and have never encountered a mascot there!

Wow from your description it must be really good.

Yeah I need aircon all the time too or I would melt…i get grouchy when it’s too hot and sticky..just can’t take it.

The man in the realistic Gorilla costume was like at the old Friday’s all the time. I always assumed it was the mascot.

Maybe? I mostly ate a Fridays tucked into a basement on a busy street in Boston (which has since closed). We largely went on Fri and Sat nights, which were for drinking, dating and hanging with friends. The place was so packed that even if they did have a mascot, there’d be no room for him!

Having said that, I still think it might be a location/SG thing.

I hadn’t realised they’d gone hahaha, I’ve only been once with my parents….We used to have Planet Hollywood too. I remember I liked their Fajitas, and it was a treat each time because it cost $25 and that was expensive to me as a student then. Do we still have Hard Rock Cafe? I also miss Denny’s

    • bookjunkie says:

they were doing so well I thought…..i was surprised when they quiety shut down like 15 or so years ago

I think Hard Rock is still around but Denny’s closed a long time ago…i loved the pancakes! Planet Hollywood Spore kaput too. sad huh…i hope all the American chains come here…I realise that I just love American food.

      • Crystal says:

There’s a Hard Rock by Forum and one on Sentosa. We have failed to eat at them three times. Once because they couldn’t produce a high chair with a safety strap. Once because they’d stopped serving food. And once because they refused to substitute side orders and wanted me to pay 12 dollars extra on top of the overpriced meal to get the side I wanted (I elected just to retract my order and leave).

If you want “real” American food, let me feed you some time when I get back from the US.

I seriously don’t think I have ever been to FRiDAY’S and have no recollection of the one at Park Mall although I know the LOVE monument. I love Chilli’s, though, but I always feel so fat and guilty afterwards!

What’s good to order at Chilli’s? I havent’ been there.
