The painting of the peacock at the gallery, Ode to Art, caught my gaze. The disturbingly arresting red sculptures seem like those done by a famous Chinese artist whose name I can’t recall.
I just checked – it’s Chen Wen Ling one of the top ten contemporary sculptures in China.
The statues here are really weird. I’ve been walking past this shop many times. Can’t understand those crotch grabbing ones. Why all of them mostly red and naked? I don’t think I’ll ever purchase an ugly statue, even if it has deep meaning.
i found them a bit on the grotesque side too. Supposed to be attention grabbing and to provoke thought. I would only buy something beautiful too
The artist is Chen Wen Ling. I find this series of his sculptures (Red Boy) intriguing when I first saw it, though it is not my favourite. The gallery has a write up on the artist and his works. You can check it out: http://www.odetoart.com/artist.php/CE33B601-B0AD-458E-93AD-7697154CB5F7,Chen%20Wen%20Ling
I have noticed in some gifts shops, there are similar smaller models of the Red Boy series sculptures on sale. Although I did not go in for a closer look, I doubt it is from the original artist.
thanks…looks like he’s had a hard life and that translates into the sculpture
I saw the series somewhere else before, perhaps on discovery channel…or at some museum…but I can’t for the life of me remember where now.
