Serangoon Central’s Nex Mall (More Shops & My Version of a Directory)

Hi there. Thanks for reading. I’ve moved to Singapore Actually

See you there 🙂

*************************

Updated on 13 Feb 2011: Pretty furnishings and bridal decorations at King & King Wong, a furniture store at level 4 that extends to the rooftop. I wonder if the products are made in Malaysia or China. They would make great decor for a restaurant or boutique and not just homes.

Updated on 28 Jan 2011: CNY at Nex

I found the Chinese New Year Decorations at Nex so pretty.  I love the floral and cute bunny theme for the Rabbit year.  Also headed to Freshness Burger for a bite.

Updated on January 2011: This post is turning out to be a super long one with my latest updates that include the Directory of shops and food outlets. I truly hope you find it useful, and I can’t wait for the library to open. I know there is still loads of space so I wish a good bookstore like Kinokuniya would open here as well. In my opinion it’s the best bookstore in Singapore.

My original post on 29 Nov 2010:

I took so many pictures the other day, I have this compulsion to put them all up.  It’s annoying, but true.  Also I figure there are tons of people out there who want to know what this mall has since there is no directory at the official Nex website.  Even at the mall itself I saw so many people approach the customer service desk to ask where this or that shop was located.  In my opinion there are way too many security guards in this mall – it can get a little intimidating when they seem to be trailing you and breathing down your neck.  Sales people at boutiques already do that.

Ramenplay, The Icing Room, Toast Box and Bread Talk are all by the same group of people.  I think the pink uniforms at the Icing Room are really cute.  They do concepts well, although the food is not spectacular.

The Ho Kee Dim Sim shop has a photo of a sweet little blonde boy and his mum in front of a plate of  steaming paos.  Maybe they want to appeal to the expat consumer.  Their chicken pao is pretty good.

Rockery – a little cafe usually seem near office spaces.

This was Food Junction.  Definitely not as attractive as the other food court, Food Republic which was packed to the brim.

There’s a build a bear shop for kids. I have seen another branch of this at Habourfront, but it always looked so dismal and empty.

If you hanker for Chinese food and steamed rice.

Now a library is something that would attract me to revisit. A new library means new books.

Beard Papa is open and I haven’t had their lovely Japanese cream puffs in years.

A Japanese food court, although I find Ajisen very localized and not authentic enough.

I love durians (the actual thorny fruit), but I loathe the smell like durian puffs. Don’t care much for the puffs either, although my family loves them.

Presented with Tea Dot and Starbucks I would always opt for Starbucks. This particular Starbucks was just too crowded and too open.

I love the orange scrub at Body Shop. Why does their stuff have to be so expensive?

My sister will be happy to discover a new Manicure place.

It’s no fight. Food Republic will win the battle over Food Junction.

The Nex Logo decked up for Christmas. The displays all around the mall look dangerous though, with the high voltage signs on them.

Long John Silvers. Not my favourite place – everything seems to be fried to a crisp.

My partner likes this place though, and the decor is nice.

The huge NTUC supermarket was not open yet, but I think it would be by today.

Great there’s Subway here. Finally a healthier fast food option.

I wonder who came up with this prata man logo? All I have to say is – did they have to get so accurate with their mascot?

My sister’s go to place for shoes. The heels break off easily but they are very affordable. I prefer sturdy comfortable shoes that last for years.

Studio Tangs has pretty shoes too.

Cotton On, the clothing store from Australia that caters to younger people.

The pretty but dangerous looking, logo in fairy lights again.

I like this Hong Kong chain store for beauty products.

NEX mall is bigger than the size of Bishan Junction 8 and Ang Mo Kio Hub combined! I haven’t been there, but i certainly must go this holiday!

  2. LL says:

Thanks for your post and pictures! It reminded me of how huge the malls are in Singapore. The main reason why my Singapore posts are so vague is that I can’t recall which mall/mall area I was in at any given moment. And we were there quite often (usually passing through or just eating).

I am sad to hear build-a-bear is so desolate. I remember when it first came out the lines would go out of the store. It was a pretty ridiculous hype that I’m glad is going away.

Singapore also has so many yummy restaurants I’ve never even seen/heard of before! What is the icing room? It sounds like you can put the frosting on your own cake? Kind of like froyo toppings..

    • bookjunkie says:

sometimes all the malls looks quite alike. unless you’ve been there a number of times it’s hard to tell them apart.

you got it right…the icing room allows you to decorate your own cupcakes. Seems like a nice activity for kids or teens.

I love the pink uniforms….they remind me of characters in Japanese anime.

  3. fuujin79 says:

Hi, glad to know that someone is looking forward to the library amidst the massive amount of retail… And yes, the books will be new!
Do keep in touch with us, we’ve just set up a facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Serangoon-Public-Library/100659083313032

Thanks for loving the library! Btw, I’m a fan of Murakami as well… Have come across this other Jap author – Yasutaka Tsutsui, that reminds me of a “darker” version of his works… 🙂
