I Learnt Something on Goop

Gwyneth Paltrow gets quite a bit of flak for her newsletter and website Goop being too pretentious and in Singapore terms ‘atas’. She always seems so perfect too and able to do anything, which of course is infuriating for lesser mortals like myself. Usually all the ideas on Goop are way out of my price range or look like way too much effort for a lazy bum like me.

But you know what? Today something in the Christmas edition newsletter appealed to me. Something I would love to try out. It’s is simple floral arrangement secret. You might know this already, but it’s new to me. You remove the leaves from the roses (even those right beneath them) so that they can pop in an arrangement. Also you tie a twine around a bunch of 6 or 7 roses to get a circular arrangement before placing them in a vase. I look forward to more simple professional ideas like this one GP. Very cool!

  1. Pretty and easy. BTW, I think I accidentally deleted you as a subscriber. Sometimes, I just mess up. Sorry.

I think there’s some technical problem with the subscription tab…I can’t seem to view my subscriptions at the moment.

good to know I’m not the only one 🙂

what does atas mean? (i’ll add this to my singlish vocab….)

        • bookjunkie says:

When someone says “Don’t be so atas” it means……”Don’t be so snooty”. It’s a Singlish word with Malay origin (meaning upstairs) and these days it’s used for expensive high scale places like restaurants you can’t afford for instance and we call them ‘atas places’. It basically is the opposite of down to earth and casual and is used in a derogatory manner to scold someone for being too snooty or a place for trying to be too exclusive.

If you friends don’t want to go to a hawker centre saying it’s too dirty, then tell them “Don’t be so atas”. It’s pronounced ah-thaas. Wish I could give you the phonetic transcription.

There’s a Singlish dictionary here so you can try out more words 🙂 I just realized that this dictionary has some dirty words too!!

HAHAHA i love this word! I just looked it up in my Coxford Singlish dictionary (yes, my colleagues bought me a dictionary) and it says Malay for “upstairs” or “higher-level” and then it gives an example: “wah, you nowsaday do’wan to eat ikan bilis, only eat caviar. become damn atas oreddy!”
    LOVE it!!!
by the way, atas comes right after the entry for “arse luck”
i think you should do a post on some of the funniest singlish terms! it would be a hit 😀

Yeah I did a draft some time ago, but left it hanging. Got lazy. I should try do the ones I actually use 🙂 just the other day my aunt said that ION is an atas mall but she prefers the smaller neighbourhood ones. I never used arse luck before….hmmmmm
