I heard a jewellry shop owner calling out to tourists – “Pearls for you? Have a look – no pressure” . In my mind I was rolling my eyes – no pressure – right! Poor tourists always get taken for a ride. My French cousin laughed at me, because once I paid S$14 for coke in Paris.
There was this resturant selling seafood, beer and chilled coconuts that was filled with tourists during the lunch hour. I was aching to tell them how they were probably being taken for a ride, but then again they were enjoying themselves smack in the middle of Chinatown and with the exchange rates, may have even found it cheap. They probably found it quaint to be sitting in the heat with the ceiling fans pushing the hot air about as they people watched. I guess even a bit like how I people watched in Paris, drinking my S$14 coke, blissfully unaware that it normally would cost S$2.
Wow! I love your pictures from Chinatown! They are so crisp and clear!
Also, I’ve been following a new blog recently and he just did a post on Singapore, which I thought you would enjoy, because he had such great experiences here: http://3gtravel.wordpress.com/2011/01/04/singaporesling/#comment-595
