Scary: 11 Trapped in Nex Mall Lift for 45 Minutes

This report in the Straits Times scares the heck out of me. I feel so sorry for the people, including the pregnant woman who was trapped. The management should definitely do something about this before someone gets hurt. With my current claustrophobia, I can’t even imagine the trauma of such an experience.

ELEVEN shoppers were trapped in a lift at NEX mall in Serangoon for 45 minutes with no answer on the intercom when they called for help according to a reader on Stomp, a popular citizen-journalism website.

The lights and fan even went off for five minutes at one point.

Eventually, Stomp reader Rykiel and 10 others had to climb through the doors to exit the lift, as it had become stuck between two floors.

‘It was a scary experience. Eleven of us including a pregnant woman were stuck inside NEX Mall lift No. 1 for 45 mins.

‘And during that period they were without ventilation and lights for five minutes.

‘Oxygen was scarce and I had no choice but to call the SCDF for help. Guess what the security guard said when the doors finally opened? He said that it was normal for the lift to break down,’ said the Stomp reader.

  1. This is awful! My husband’s best friend was killed by an elevator at 19 years old when he was in college. It was a real tragedy–they are so dangerous. I’m glad everyone was ok.

I am awfully sorry to hear that. That is so horribly tragic.

I hope the management at Nex and other malls take lift upgrading and maintanence seriously. They should have better emergency procedures in place. I was once at another mall and the lift just going up and down without stopping at any floor. I am terrified but nothing I got out safe. I wrote an email to the top most person to complain and only then did they re-haul the whole lift. This kind of thing really freaks me out.

  2. Oh my… this is really scary. I can’t imagine being trapped inside the elevator for 45 minutes. I would really freak out. I feel sorry for the people who got trapped.

I can’t even bring myself to think about it. It’s just awful and my heart goes out to them. I am sure many will never be able to step into a lift for a long long time or ever and I would totally understand that.

Oh my goodness, this is just scary enough to warrant a no-no to lifts for a long time. Whenever I hit the malls or other buildings, I prefer taking the stairs than the lifts.

I am appalled at the response of the security guard. I hope he was misquoted or else it would be just so callous of him to say so. This is the type of attitude you wouldn’t want in healthcare professionals, the police and even security guards, cuz if they had this attitude, how would they ever do their best?

I’m only glad that the Nex mall doesn’t have that many levels? Imagine if you were stuck on the 60th floor! Horrifying!

I am so taken aback by it too. It’s just horrible. Makes me wonder about the condition of lifts in other malls as well. And this one is pretty new. What about the older malls? yikes. Not good for easily freaked out people like me.
