Another New Mall Opens: The Clementi Mall & Basement Directory

Since I started this new mall investigating thing I decided that I should check out The Clementi Mall as well. It’s not officially open yet and is the one next to Clementi MRT Station. I don’t know how the Clementi area was named, but there is a piano sonata and sonatina composer named Muzio Clementi. I find trivia like this fascinating which is why I am a total nerd. Anyway I decided to google and find out the origin of the name Clementi and I found it was named after Cecil Clementi Smith, a British colonial administrator, as I suspected. Most places in Singapore have names with a colonial connection.

Here are some photos that I took of the basement food outlets. Only the basement is open for now and the upper floors are cordoned off. This is supposed to be a 6 storey mall, but it’s slated to be open in phases.

You can’t miss the mall as it’s next to Clementi MRT.

Another unimaginative name.

My first impression was good – so clean and bright.

Here’s the directory for the Basement which is mostly F&B outlets. The disappointing this is that there was nothing new. Again I see a repeat of the chain outlets like KFC, Burger King, Long John Silver’s, Ya Kun’s Kaya Toast and so forth. Out of all these I guess the Thai casual dining place, Sticky Rice is not as common, although it’s a chain as well. I guess if your live nearby and you like these outlets then it would be pretty exciting to have them closer to you now. I am sure students at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the schools nearby will rejoice at a new place to hangout.

I’m happy that there’s an NTUC Finest here. I tend to like browsing at supermarkets.

The Sticky Rice, Thai Cafe.

Ya Kun’s a good place to stop and have a coffee. It’s a pity I am not into kaya toast although my sister will love this place.

There are the usual small food takeaway outlets where you can get curry puffs and paos. I especially like the chicken pao (steamed Cantonese style buns) sold at Ho Kee.

Since there was nothing else ready besides the basement, I took a walk outside.

It’s not linked underground, but you can just take the stairs down when you come out of Clementi MRT station and the mall is right there. It’s all covered so you won’t get wet in the rain.

More shops will open in March, according to the poster at the Mall entrance.

There was a directory posted outside as well that led towards the Macdonalds.

Looking at the poster, the Level 1 is supposed to be open, but I may have missed it as the elevators were cordoned off. Perhaps I should have taken the lift instead. Oh well.

Levels 3 to 5 are said to be opening in March 2011, which is pretty soon. I hope more personality is injected into the upper levels.
