How Do I Make Money on a WordPress Blog?

I have been pondering this, since I don’t think I can go back to working 9-5 which is more like 8-8 pm at least in a Corporate job in Singapore. I also realized that my true love is writing and not paper pushing.

I am still nervous about migrating the blog so I approached WordPress about sharing the ad revenue. They instructed me to sign up for Google’s Adsense and Skimlinks. Google has sent me a rejection (sob!) as they say I don’t own the domain. Meanwhile Skimlinks just approved me (yay!), but now I need to figure out how to set up a PayPal account.

I am such a worrier and wonder if

1. My bank account is secure if I link it to Pay Pal
2. Whether readers will be annoyed by ads in an ad free personal blog
3. If I finally do decide to migrate my blog, what if everything disappears – all 1407 posts (but there’s now the option of an upgrade with the help of WordPress, but it’s still all a bit confusing. Not sure if I then have to purchase the domain first)

Just wanted to share my thoughts with you.

It’s very easy to migrate your blog. Go to ur Tiny Island blog and click on export. Save those files. Go to your Singapore Actually blog and click upload. Voila, all your Tiny Island posts will appear in Singapore Actually. If you don’t delete your Tiny Island posts, they will still be there.

As a start, I would advise you to just export 1 month’s worth. There is an option to choose the date range you want to export. If it all looks right to you, you can export more.

Try this out first. Don’t worry, nothing will disappear if you don’t click delete! 🙂
Let me know if it works for you!

I think Google Adsense will accept you if you use the Singapore Actually blog. I know it rejects “young” blogs because my friend tried to sign up for Google Adsense only 1 day after setting up his blog, but yours should be long enough.

Hey, whatever you do, just back up and you should be safe. Paypal is very easy to set up and you can link that to your Singapore bank account too. Just pay attention to the charges incur when you transfer your fund (if it is above a certain amount).
I won’t be annoy with the ads (if there are) on your blog. 🙂 Not unless you have 50% of your page plaster with ads! 😀

Yeah I wouldn’t like too many ads either…I find it distracting. I think right now without us quite knowing WordPress already has discrete ads on our blogs in order to keep the free site running.

Thanks for the info about PayPal. I will work on setting that up next.

  4. I’ve been thinking about your blog and I’m convinced you are going to do well with your ebook! I know you can do it. Here’s what you do. First you make a graphic like mine on my right sidebar. I made mine with powerpoint. Gooble ebooks. Then you copy and paste your best material into a word document. Save it as a .pdf. I made my ebook the same as a screen size. Then you go to lulu.com and start a new project. You upload your ebook. Then they will guide you to design a cover or you can design your own. Then all you have to do is add a graphic to your side bar and link to lulu.

    And yes, paypal is secure.

If you need help, write me and ask me.

I think I should just start on a draft already and stop my OCD perfectionist all or nothing ways.

Been thinking a lot about the ebook you suggested and it seems the best way to go. Thanks so much for the detailed help Julie 🙂

  5. I signed up on adsense on a blogspot blog and made .06 cents. It was NOT worth it to me. I don’t know though. You have a high traffic count so perhaps that could work for you.

I tried out Nuffnang on old blogger blogs which is a local thing that makes a bit more than adsense but I since haven’t collected a cent although over the last year I made S$20….I need to hit S$50 to ‘cash out’ and I feel so frustrated and feel it’s not worth the effort. I never tried skimlinks before though. That’s a UK site that I just found out about from WordPress support.

  6. I won’t mind ads as long as they don’t “follow me” around the screen or blink in my face! 🙂

  7. Speaking of which, we are lucky we have good operating systems! I was once at my uncle’s house and he had a Windows 7 operating system. You couldn’t make Google your home page, you had to use Bling or something ridiculous. Then on occasion I would hear a voice start talking to me about dental offers. It was crazy because there was no pop up window. Just a voice. Talk about HORRIBLY intrusive ads. 🙂

Paypal is secure, so it should be fine. I know cos I use Paypal alot to buy stuff, as for receiving money, am going to be exploring that since I’m thinking of setting up an online business as well. There are some charges that you will have to pay. But the systems at Paypal are by far one of the better ones out there.

Also, great tips that I’ve learnt through this post. As you already know, I am thinking of migrating my blog to another name but am also worried about losing the posts. So like you, I’m a worrier! If you do successfully migrate your posts, could I come knocking on your day for some tech-help pls?

Lastly, no issues on the ads. I guess it’s fine if you keep the layout of your blog clean and the ads to one side of the page. You could also consider advertorials as a form of advertising as well. 😉 I’ll continue to support you.

Thanks Lady J. I am such a worrier/OCD/perfectionist that I ponder things for quite a bit before I do them. Now that you have explained about PayPal I will look into that next. Will post about what I learn along the way. I realized that since I started blogging in 2006 I think and on WordPress from 2010 I have learnt so much about Social Media so that sure feels good. For me learning through doing rather than through classes is always more effective. I would fall asleep in a computer class.
