Uniquely Singapore Drinks

We have so many unique beverages in Singapore and I am not just talking about the Singapore Sling. When I say uniquely Singapore, I mean Malaysia as well as we are so closely connected culturally. We were part of Malaya after all and I think we’re very lucky to have such nice neighbours.

My favourite pink drink has to be bandung. It’s just so pretty. This is a lovely mixture of fresh milk in rose syrup.

Rose syrup with lime is my sister’s pick.

And of course I love my teh alia (milky tea with ginger) and my teh tarek (milky tea that has been poured from one cup into another skillfully which introduces texture and bubbles at the top.

We also have our unique fizzy drinks. We refer to them in the 70’s as bottle drinks since they all came in glass bottles then. It was a delight to drink straight from the bottle on a blistering hot day. I recall that at Chinese weddings we always looked forward to the fizzy F&N or Fanta orange. Miranda strawberry was another delight that I don’t think you can find anymore.

Luckily we still have our uniquely Singaporean sarsi which is our take on rootbeer. It is sweeter somehow with more caramel I think.

Lee’s pineapple juice can’t be beat.

And of course we have our kopi (local coffee) and all it’s variations.

There are many more beverages that I’ve left out and will be updating this post as I take more photos.

Wonderful post! You’ve reminded me of all the down to earth drinks that I like, and they don’t cost much either. I loved bandung and all the soft drinks as a kid, but I wasn’t allowed to have them much, as is the case with most other kids I think. Now, I don’t know where to get good bandung. You would think it’s easy enough to make, yet I’ve had some which were so diluted it was a rip off. Love teh tarik, F&N Orange and Sarsi too! There’s something special about Sarsi that just makes it different from Rootbeer.

Oh yes too diluted bandung…no good. I think it depends on the Rose Syrup too. My fave cordial is the F&N brand.

I always think that I will miss Singapore food if I’m away but I think I will miss the drinks as well.

    Hi,
I’m part of a cooking club and next month the theme is “Malaysian”. I am assigned the drinks. Do you have recipes for popular alcoholic drinks? I’d like to end the evening with a tea/coffee unique to the culture as well. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Ginger tea would be good. Just boil some milk. Then boil the tea separately. Pound some ginger to get the juice out. And then combine the 3. Add sugar, condensed and evaporated milk as you like.
