Joo Chiat is one of the most charming areas in Singapore in terms of it’s old architecture. I love strolling here and taking photos. So much colour. So much detail and nostalgia.
I find this red building just stunning against our blue sky.
A sleepy row of restored Peranakan style shophouses. These were built in the 1930’s according to a charming blog called Yesterday.
Loved the simple dangling lamp.
There were bars on the windows then, for security. It’s now an architectural feature.
Some modern features like this flower lamp that I think I saw at Ikea?
It must be nice to live here. It feels so serene.
It was a weekend too, and so quiet. I think everyone was in town (aka Orchard Road)
Our Conservation people do a wonderful job.
Love the muted grey against the white. Just the little details like this number plate.
And just next to this row of shophouses an old kampong house.
You can probably see many of these lovely houses in Malaysia.
On a raised platform. Was that in case of floods? And is there a little basement room at the bottom? I wonder if anyone lives here. With the please after the no parking sign – there must be.
More interesting ceiling lamps.
Wow! I often go to Joo Chiat but the charm of the place often pass me by. I really like how you can see the beauty of this place through your lens. Lovely!!
Thanks Lady J 🙂 Singapore does have some beautiful areas. I prefer them to crowded town.
I’ve never been to Singapore, so I enjoyed your pictures. I especially like the lighting fixtures. I like the flowered one a lot (even if it is a modern design at IKEA!)
Thanks for sharing your photos 🙂
Thank you so much Jannat 🙂 Lighting always makes such a huge difference.
Some of the buildings (esp in part 2) are very Peranakan! 🙂 The details on the swing door gave it all away 🙂 Very luxurious…
So quaint and charming 🙂
The Rumah Melayu, btw, are raised to avoid flood, that’s correct 🙂 I grew up in a small kampung and, it is not uncommon to see homemade sampans beneath the houses 🙂
Thanks for confirming that architectural detail for me. I must look out for the sampans next time I’m in Malaysia.
I’ve long heard about the charming streets of Joo Chiat, Katong and the surrounding neighbourhood. Despite having visited many hidden gems and less-visited places of interest in Singapore, Joo Chiat is, surprisingly, an area that I have yet to truly venture into. Guess I should devote more time to visit the different heartlands in Singapore. What do you think? 🙂
That’s for sure Blisschic….without blogging I don’t think I would have ventured out so much….another reason blogging is nice.

Hello! Can I ask where exactly the picture of the Architectural Heritage Award Logo was taken?
