Uniquely Singapore Provision Stores

In about twenty years, I have a feeling provision stores selling old fashioned brooms and mops, may become a rare sight as we buy our cleaning equipment from supermarkets and hypermarts. We may not even use the old way of sweeping and mopping any more, as vacuum cleaners get cheaper. I feel so guilty to say this, but I just love the ease of the easy clean mop. Back in the 70’s, I recall cleaning our primary school classroom’s cement floors with a straw broom and it just didn’t seem effective at all.

On another note most kids these days don’t take over their parents hawker stalls or provision stores and there are many that would rather work in an office or run a sweet modern cafe instead. I guess they also see how hard their parents worked and the changing tastes and trends. It’s quite a pity though. It’s almost impossible to compete with the huge hypermarts and their economies of scale.

We also hardly buy the old fashioned type biscuits in favour of cookies from Subway for instance.
