Disappointed and Saddened by the Personal Attacks on Vincent Wijeysingha

I try not to get worked up by politics and to always keep a cool head. But this time the gutter politics has gone too far and I just can’t keep quiet. Let me be totally honest. I am so angry right now.

So many questions have arisen in my mind since. Are they so threatened by Vincent’s obvious capabilities that they had to resort to this. I was pleased when Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said this was going to be a clean fight. That commands my respect and not this type of low handedness. Minister Menor Lee Kuan Yew himself said let’s not go around like this moral police and that statement raised my level of respect for him. There’s this video as well.

These are my personal views which I would like to express. I have always felt that to discriminate against a person because of their sexuality is just wrong. I equate this to infringing on basic human rights.

I have to say I am impressed by many of the female PAP candidates like Dr Amy Khor who has rightly asked us to judge her based on her own merits. That’s the way it should be for all candidates. From what I’ve read, I see that they have led a dignified campaign and not resorted to mud slinging and I think that’s the way it should be.

I am glad that Kenneth Jeyaretnam of the Reform Party has supported Vincent of the SDP as well, in this statement.

“Somebody’s sexuality is not a part of the qualities to be a politician. At the Reform Party, we’re an inclusive, liberal party and we don’t believe in discriminating against people on the grounds of gender, race, religion or sexual orientation,”

These writers express the ugliness of it all better than I do, in letters to the press.

I was incredibly dissapointed, but not terribly shocked when this all went down. It’s a classic political strategy to distract voters with a wedge issue than to focus on main issues where your party might lose.

Following my comment I spoke on the phone with the TNP editor. I summarised his response into 5 points here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/kirsten-han/my-conversation-with-the-tnp-editor/10150249275575561

This quote in today’s papers shows what a wonderful and decent person Vincent is when asked how he would react when he met Vivian:

He said: ‘I will embrace him like a brother. We are gentlemen.’

This is a very interesting topic, and I’ve read a handful of blogs and news articles on the distasteful comment made by a leader.

It is rather uncalled for (for an educated person to speak as such), and I was just telling my friends if politicians in Singapore were to resort to fear-mongering/smear-tactic campaigning, they should look at Singapore’s neighbours for more inspirations. At least, it would be more sensational than calling names? *sarcasm implied*

I hope everyone in Singapore gets calibre leaders who place the people as their utmost priority 🙂 Do let me know on the results when out 🙂
