#81. A Country that is Politically Awakened, & her People Care

It was heartwarming to see so many new faces standing up to be the voice of Singaporeans, and more importantly the voice of the poor and marginalized. I never felt more patriotic then when I heard these inspirational speeches of hope and have the Singapore National Pledge boomed out in unison by a swelling crowd that were extra polite and friendly to each other.

Used to say the words mindlessly as a child in primary school. This time we really understood and meant every single word. I must confess that I never felt prouder.

We the citizens of Singapore
pledge ourselves as one united people
regardless of race, language or religion
to build a democratic society
based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and
progress for our nation.

And I must say it was awesome to have the PM try to communicate with us on Facebook. Especially the part when PM Lee said he was a newbie and asked us not to flame him.

I am loving that we are experiencing a time of new hope and optimism.

Singapore is not the only country becoming politically awakened in the world.

I’ve been reading your tweets and retweets about this election. The energy is amazing! Young Singaporeans have been speaking passionately about what they want for their country. Is it just a youth thing, or are older adults as involved as the people I’m reading on Twitter?

I think most of the people on twitter are around their 20s and very few like me are in their 40’s. But it’s definitely a political awakening for even the older generation like my mum and aunts and uncles. We are finally understanding that a move towards real democracy is a possibility. this is only the 2nd time I’ve been able to vote but there are people my age who have only voted once or never before.

  3. It’s so exciting to see that you’re part of history. Thanks so much for this first hand look at what’s going on! keep it coming!
