Tanglin Mall Floods

Unbelievable! This is one of my favourite malls too. There has been heavy rain before, but this mall has never flooded. Pretty shocking footage where it looks like it’s raining inside the mall.

I know it’s been raining like crazy, but seriously, what’s wrong with our drainage system? This kinda thing has been happening too many times. Maybe if there was more transparency about how everything works (yes even about the whole drainage system and why it floods where it does), we would be more understanding. Just my humble opinion that lack of information can lead to distrust.

I can’t help but feel that the mainstream media always seems to want to protect the authorities in the way the news is reported, especially towards the end of that report. I wish they would just state the facts instead and not the excuses. I do feel sorry for the store owners and employees who are scrambling with the clean up and trying to rescue their stock. I must however agree that Singapore is definitely experiencing global warming. But then again, as a kid, I witnessed similarly heavy monsoon rains and Orchard Road never flooded. This is what I cannot reconcile.

And perhaps it’s not such a good idea to increase our population even further that we need to build and expand underground. Simplistically, it seems to me, like our infrastructure can’t hold our population. It just feels like we’re bursting at the seams, especially during this school holiday period. It’s enough to drive you bonkers.

Why does it keep flooding nowadays? Was there a lack of news coverage in previous years, or is it really true that floods occur more frequently now. I love Tanglin mall too. Wonder if those shops at Liat Towers basement will move out? Think the flood barriers have been installed, but did not stop the flood waters from entering…

    the footage is ridiculous!

We had flash flooding last year, at this time, too. Wendy’s had to delay it’s opening for several months.

So much for the whole “we’re raising/fixing Orchard Road” solution.

yeah I totally feel the same way. I feel sorry for the store owners and employees who had to frantically try to save the store and inventory.

I think it’s the “we’re raising/fixing Orchard Road” that might have contributed to flooding elsewhere (not that Orchard Road didn’t flood). I mean, logic dictates that if you raise one part of the road the water’s just gonna go somewhere else, right? Seems to be fairly simple science to me. Raising the roads will be a stop-gap but not a real solution.

Just another POV – I was on Bukit Timah Road yesterday during the period of heaviest rain and was thoroughly impressed by how quickly the water ‘receded’ as soon as the rain relented. The infrastructure is incredible here. What do you expect city planners to do when Mother Nature unleashes her fury?

(The US has been dealing with real floods this spring – significant loss of life and property, entire towns destroyed and people’s livliehood taken away – and though some of it is due to global climate change, much of it is also due to our lack of investment in proper infrastructure.)

Omg… this is so sad. But drainage system was only recently upgraded? (I remember reading coverage on it in various international/local media). People, esp children and the elderly, have to be more careful. Flood water can sometimes sweep people away.

Could it be el nino season again? The last el nino caused massive flooding in various places (where wouldn’t flood normally despite long torrential rains) across Malaysia and KL too.
