The Crowds Throng to VivoCity for the Great Singapore Sale

I don’t really get the Great Singapore Sale. We have sales all the time, but it never feels like real genuine discount like what I experience when I buy stuff overseas in Australia and the US. Anyone had good deals during this period?

I don’t shop much for clothes, but everyone around me seems to. My family loves shopping and a good bargain. For me I guess I do like it when Ikea product prices get slashed before the new catalogue items come out. If I had to categorize it I would say, books and furniture are the things I like browsing best, even if I don’t end up buying anything. I also do like kitchen utensils for some reasons, even though I can’t cook for nuts. Perhaps it’s the element of a well crafted product. The beauty of a sleek design and beautiful colours. A pink kenwood cake mixer comes to mind here.

I think there is a total lack of innovation in clothing design which is why the vintage stores like those at Haji Lane are so refreshing. Another exception is shopping with my cousin D because she is decisive, has good taste and looks great in everything. I watch in wonder as she balances on those skinny stilettos. I only wish I could. It’s like having your own dress up doll. Yup I force her to model clothes and she obliges. It’s helps that she is naturally super tiny, a size 0-2 so that it’s easy for her to find dresses and outfits that fit her in Singapore. If you’re any bigger, shopping in Singapore is a masochistic experience. Another blogger who’s a really nice girl and loves shopping, Lady J, does most of her shopping online or when she travels. Do check out her blog. She’s a Singaporean doing the expat thing in Switzerland right now and she updates her blog regularly.

Anyway I digress. I wanted this post to show the crazy crowds at Vivo. Also saw an interesting bubble bee boxing window display at the Ted Baker store. Anyway battling the sales crowds is like being in boxing match. You feel battered and bruised psychologically with all that jostling.

If I was forced to pick my clothing and shoes stores where I actually like quite a number of the designs, I would say, Gap, Zara, Ted Baker, Muji, and Camper off the top of my head.

If I was left to my own devices, I would be a total agoraphobic hermit. And since I have been brought to a mall, I take refuge with photo taking and blogging about it. At least it gives me fodder for my blog. And I guess it’s not ‘normal’ to be indoors all the time. I did appreciate the prettiness of this huge pink Gap sale sign against the navy exterior of the store.

This photo does not quite capture how crowded it really was.

Awesome pictures, tinyisland. Any shopaholic would go for that sale. In Singapore, has some people gone into a massive shopping frenzy like cutting queues in a sale like this?

I’m looking forward to seeing what the gap has on offer for E. Their stuff is never otherwise on sale in SG.

But yeah, I’m kind of bitter about the lack of clearance items and sales in SG overall.

I was so excited about the real sales in US and Australia when I was there on holiday some years back. I got books for just S$5 and clothes for S$10 and couldn’t believe it. Good quality too.

My tip for clothes shopping during a sale, go with someone who can stand in line for you at the dressing rooms, while you pick out your clothes and then stand in line at the check out counter while you try on the clothes.. You might need to buy this person a huge lunch/dinner to thank them after 🙂
