Look Out for the Blood Red Moon Tonight

Update at 3.23am: The sky has a strange slight red tinge, but I can’t see the moon at all as the sky is completely clouded over with flashes of lightning. I am quite disappointed, but I hope someone else manages to see the phenomenon and posts a picture as scientists say it can be seen with the naked eye. What makes it even more interesting is that some people say it means the end of the world. Adds a nice eerie element.

What I wrote a few hours ago:
I had to check out the moon just now. The moon was not the usual white, but a bit yellowish. Tonight when the earth’s shadow falls over the moon at 3.25 am tonight till 5 am, we are supposed to see a blood red moon. Here’s a video of the whole scientific explanation of the lunar eclipse, which is pretty fascinating. If you’re in Australia, Singapore, India or Africa you’ll probably be able to see it but apparently not if you’re in North America, according to what I just read online.

I wonder if I will be able to wake up to see it since this 100 minute long eclipse only happens every 10 years with the next one in 2018. I am figuring I will sleep through it.

If you do catch it, I would love to see photos on your blog especially if you’re in a country where you can get a really good clear view.

An attempt at a close-up that became blurry.

Here was the crescent moon from last week, just for contrast. This was when the moon first appeared in the early evening, shortly before the sun even began to set.

Thanks for alerting me to this – will have to check it out. I should still be awake and catch it here in South Africa 🙂

  2. I knew it was a weird moon or something because strangeness is plentiful around here. People are acting crazy….crazy weather (just drove through a hail storm) and crazy drivers.. I am sure there are thousands of women going into labor tonight as well!

the hail storm sounds interesting…I only experienced a phenomenon like that once for a few minutes and it was exciting.

In the end we were clouded out and no sight of the moon although the sky had a strange red tinge.
