Arnold’s Fried Chicken hits the Spot

Not the Arnold’s from Happy Days, but the Arnold’s in Singapore with the greasy but great home style fried chicken. They seem to be located in old, out of the way, delapidated shopping centres, like this one at Hougang Green Shopping Mall (we needed a GPS to get there – 21 Hougang Street 51). There’s always a queue outside, no matter what time you go. It’s just that popular. Come here on days when you want to chuck that diet and comfort yourself with oily, tasty fried chicken.

There’s a delivery service as well if you don’t care for queuing for at least 20 minutes before you get a seat, and another 10 minutes before you get your food. Or maybe that’s why the chicken tasted extra wonderful – the wait and the fact that I was starving by then.

It was surprisingly cheery and bright on the inside, with another queue for take-away orders. Also you pay at the end of your meal. While you wait outside, you place your order and it’s quite a good system I must say. They will notify you when a seat is available and then just sit, be patient, and wait for your meal to arrive. Don’t order the teh tarik (it tastes like water with powdered chemicals). Such a waste as there is an Indian Muslim stall next door which serves the authentic stuff not made from a 3 in 1 mix.

So yummy when it comes to you piping hot. They expect you to use your fingers are you’re only provided with a spoon for your coleslaw. Don’t worry as there’s an area to wash your hands at the back of the restaurant.

On the whole I must say this is more home style, but I have recently developed a fondness for the spicy fried chicken at Texas Chicken, which is much less oily. But fried chicken doesn’t look oily as the batter soaks it all up. It’s sneaky that way.

The fried chicken looks tempting. But how many Arnold’s branches are they around in Singapore?

  2. Great photos! I love Arnold’s. 🙂 I always thought there’s only one at Sunshine Plaza. Hmm think I should try Texas Chicken soon too! Spicy chicken that’s less oily sounds fab.

Nooooooo…….remind me not to look at fried chicken just before bed time!

That looks way better than the local version of KFC, which is a sad disappointment.
