I am Singaporean because I love going to Malaysia

I think most Singaporeans should be thankful that Malaysia still welcomes us and that it’s so easy to get there. It’s no secret that we go there for cheaper petrol, food, groceries and even medicine. And we can relieve our chewing gum craving as well. It also makes me realize how much nicer, friendlier and more polite Malaysians are. The country also has a rustic charm that we have lost.

I strive to be more like them, but I feel for my fellow citizens who have become the way they are because of the high stress, densely populated environment with the escalating cost of living and stagnant salaries.

The hard times are felt, especially by the unfortunate group of Singaporeans who faced the worst of the recession, outsourcing and unemployment a decade ago.

The country is still oppressive, but thank goodness for alternative politicians who are helping us to wake up. I love how that even after the Elections were over, they continue to strive and reach out to us. They never took our support for granted and that is why they will continue to have mine.

Thought I’d share some photos of the Malaysian mall that Singaporeans love the most – Johor Bahru City Square as it’s just a minutes away from the border.

Clothes at half the price.

We used to all be part of one country – Malaya. Malaysia’s National Day is just a few days afters our own.

The best part of JB though, is outside the mall. You can read about it at my other blog, Tiny Island.

We wanted to go to JB a month or two ago, but were so confused as to how you actually get there. I wanted to rent a car, but it seems problematic to take it over the border. I’m kind of unclear how you get around once you’re over there, and it all seemed very overwhelming, so we didn’t.

I’d like to, eventually though…most likely after little girl #2 is born. With the pregnancy, it’s just not a practical trip, even if it is just next door.

It is a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to the roads.

When we wanted to go to KL we took the private yellow bus and that was pretty good and hassle free. The bus had reclining seats so you can take a nap.

But my fave way to travel is by ferry…I prefer going by sea…..but that was to Desaru in Malaysia, and Batam in Indonesia. For a beach holiday.
