Wicked Costumes at Marina Bay Sands

I am enticed by the musical Wicked. Would totally go if I could afford the tickets for the good seats. I watched a musical from very bad seats before and I could hardly see or hear a thing and ended up nodding off. So bad huh?

Glinda the Good’s Dorothy ballgown is so princessy and pretty. (read the comments to learn more about this musical)

The costume in the first two photos is actually worn by Glinda the Good in the opening number, where she descends in a bubble and greets the citizens of oz with “It’s so good to see me, isn’t it?” (or something to that effect) before launching into her number.

The costume in the third picture is worn by Elphaba (the “wicked witch of the west”) in the 2nd act.

Dorothy isn’t actually in the show at all…there’s a reference to her, and the “melting” scene is done creatively, but there isn’t a person who actually plays Dorothy, nor is she a real character in the show.

The show revolves around Galinda (later known as “Glinda the Good”) and Elphaba’s (later known as the “Wicked Witch of the West”) relationship as they meet at school, start off loathing each other, become friends, and then each makes a pivotal choice at the end of the first act that seals their reputation. It’s a gorgeous production with a tight story, solid music and lyrics, and is usually beautifully staged.

I was lucky enough to catch it in previews on Broadway with the original cast (Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Joel Grey, etc) before it became so popular that ticket prices went through the roof and become unobtainable. I introduce Ravi to it when it toured through Boston in 2007. In 2008 we did a “behind the scenes” tour that the Chicago production was doing. I haven’t seen it staged in a few years, but I can’t wait to see it again in January.

Sorry–I’m a HUGE musical theater fan (more than half of my 3k+ itunes library is broadway) and Wicked is one of, if not my absolute favorite show.

Oh my gosh….Idina Menzel…I love her on Glee!

Ok I’m definitely eager for your post once you watch the show.

Thanks for clarifying about Dorothy and what the script is like. Sounds really interesting.

I don’t know, I read the book and found it to be very boring in itself, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear ….

Didn’t know there was a book based on Wicked. I always wondered how closely Wicked follows the story of the Wizard of Oz.

      • Crystal says:

It’s actually the inverse. Gregory Maguire wrote Wicked and then Steven Schwartz turned it into a musical. The book is fairly dry and much more about politics than the show (which is political, but not in a dry way at all—check out the song “Something bad (happening in oz)” on iTunes to get an idea of that.

The musical pares the story back to Galinda and Elphaba, although both characters vary from their book counterparts to better showcase the actresses they were written for (Elphaba was written specifically for Idina) and the romance between Elphaba and Fiyero. It’s an origin story–for the tin man, the cowardly lion, the scarecrow…and the the witches…hence the tagline “So much happened before Dorothy dropped in”

Best songs..which is hard for me as I love it start to finish
–The Wizard and I (from Act 1, sung by Elphaba as an idealistic 18/19 year old, sharing her hopes for the future)
—Popular (from Act 1, sung by Galinda–just a fun flighty number, mostly to showcase her starting point–a fairly shallow teenage girl, because her end point is so different)
—Defying Gravity–the end number for act 1 and a consistent bring down the house number. Sung by both Elphaba and Galinda, it’s the pivotal moment where they make the choices that will define them for the rest of their lives. (done, sort of, on Glee, season 1)
—As Long As You’re Mine–Elphaba and Fiyero’s love song–beautiful mostly because it’s immediately followed by
–No Good Deed–Elphaba, shattered by a dramatic loss, stops running and says “let all oz be agreed, I’m wicked through and through” and embraces the image the Wizard has been trying to brand her with–the Wicked Witch of the West
—For Good–The final duet between Glinda and Elphaba, where they have resolution (and was sung by Chris Colfer and Lea Michelle–again, sort of, in the season 2 finale of Glee).

I would strongly encourage you to check out the soundtrack…you can get the story from the songs, but the show is SO worth seeing.

I would argue that it’s a pathetically small theater…any seat should be good (although I’ll confess we sprung for the expensive seats for each other’s Xmas gift this year).

To be honest I was surprised that it’s being staged in Singapore at all, as the Wizard’s government is pointedly corrupt and dictatorial. And there’s a secondary/tertiary storyline about how the Wizard became corrupted, and what his relationship to Elphaba really is.

that’s really cool. I love that there is the theme about the Wizard’s government….that peaked my interest. And I do love musicals starting as a kid with the Sound of Music….think I watched that a million times. My Fair Lady is another favourite of mine….but these are movie musicals. It’s only now that the Singapore Arts scene is really picking up. When I was a kid it was very very dry and the Arts was something very much neglected. Everyone was expected to do Science in school or be considered a failure…so sad huh?
