112 Katong: Singapore’s Newest Mall & My Directory Picks

So here I was at 112 Katong. Had no idea of its existence before. It used to be the Katong mall, but it’s so utterly different now. I don’t like checking out malls, but my partner does, especially if it’s new. And since I blog I might as well snap some shots, I wasn’t expecting much from this mall. Had very low expectations and I must say I was impressed. So impressed that 112 Katong might even become one of my favourites. Checked out more and it’s being marketed as a luxury mall in the East. It’s on 112 East Coast Road. (Well it’s so confusing but scrutinizing the website revealed that the mall is I12 as in 1 want to. Don’t like the pun very much and it’s confusing visually to add to the problem. No wonder the website address is still 112 and not I12).

Well it all depends on the crowds. I might like it better if it remains relatively empty. Pushy crowds tend to annoy me (and I am sure you too). But there were some awesome choices in terms of restuarants and supermarkets. Namely TGI Fridays and the gourmet supermarket Market Place. It’s also great that the mall has a cinema.

Yup, marketplace is one of my top picks for supermarkets. It has more variety and stuff from the US.

Really liked that J-Mart, a japanese speciality grocery store is here too. A good place to get cup noodles.

I love that there were so many dining choices and also Food Republic if you want hawker style food.

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar at #01-05. (from official directory: Hearing the word ‘shots’ used to paralyse us with fear but not for chocoholics heading to Max Brenner’s Restaurant.)

This is some information I picked out from the official website: Baci Italian Cafe
#01-07 (Baci re-creates an authentic Italian experience, serving quality Italian coffee and fresh, café-style food in a neighbourhood setting inspired by European coffee culture)

Who doesn’t know T.G.I. Friday’s? American causal dining chain at #01-13.

You can go for the Wan Tan Mee from Airport Road Hawker Centre, Thai Food or Nasi Padang.

The GV Cinemas are on the top level next to Food Republic, so you can grab a bite and head for the latest show.

Gloria Jean’s for coffee. I didn’t see any Starbucks or any other chain outlet here.

New Japanese restaurant which sold Japanese style pizza and pasta which I happen to love. Must try this out one day. I made the mistake of having the most awful laksa at Food Republic instead (I just wasn’t thinking straight). It was filled with too much tumeric. It was practically yellow. Didn’t like it in the least. Hope they improve it soon and it’s just teething problems.

I must say the whole layout wasn’t too crammed, like the terrible layout at Nex. This place felt more like Liang Court.

I was surprised to see many stores that I only see at Orchard Road, here in the cosy and laid back East. Saw some unique stores as well. Gund bears are so utterly soft.

If you want naughty or hip (do kids even say hip any more?) gifts I guess here’s the store -Khul. It was filled with teens.

Loved the glass bird at Bo Concept. The style here seems Nordic.

More shots of the Mall from the outside. It’s surrounding area is very pretty with low rise shophouses.

Just went 112 Katong yesterday. Think it will become a popular hangout for makan gathering soon!

    • bookjunkie says:

yeah I was really impressed. It’s a great improvement from what it used to be and I dare say even more exciting than Parkway Parade.

I’m glad you like Katong 112 too! Personally, I like it and it’s something different in the suburban landscape. I don’t think it’s geared to be like your typical suburban mall which is profoundly mass marketed and generated for high-traffic influx. Katong 112 is very lifestyle-oriented, niche market and designated. I reckon it’s bold of them to instill such a concept in the East when the crowd is more sophisticated, but not for other parts of Singapore. I personally think it’s like the Paragon of the East, not so much for retail but for lifestyle. Have you checked out Changi Citypoint yet? I reckon you might like it too 🙂

    • bookjunkie says:

If the new Changi mall is like this one I think I will like it 🙂 It was nice to find outlets I only normally find in town.

  3. Plee says:

Hello! What do you think are some of the most pretentious places (cafes, etc..) in Singapore? There are all these boutique cafes popping up around the island, each looking kind of cool and different but somehow just lacks that homely touch… :/

    • bookjunkie says:

I don’t really like pretentious and atas places. I think I’m like you…..a good coffee or drinks but hopefully in a place with nice ambience yet cosy & homely with humble owners who leave you be.

  4. leanne says:

Hey came across ur blog! and saw that u really like japanese cup noodles! Would like to recommend Sake Inn at Tampines 1, they not only retail sake but also have a $2 concept corner, where japanese crackers and cup noodles are retailing at only $2!! Cheap and great deals 🙂

  5. GYS says:

Today 6 plus in the evening, we went to B1-19 Gong Cha at I12Katong, the girl who was preparing my drink kept talking to one of her colleague, i hinted at the counter that for hygiene purposes, the girl should not talk while beverage is concerned. After we walked out the shop, there was laughter behind….. This is so called short of services DNA;)
