I know I can be repetitive myself but here are some phrases, especially used in a business context, that really annoy me:
1. Having said that…
2. Cross the T’s and dot the i’s
3. World Class
4. As per your request
5. Window of opportunity
6. ASAP
7. Hit the ground running
And some uniquely Singapore words and expressions that make me want to scream:
1. Shiok
2. Revert to me ASAP
3. Talk cock
Do you have any to add to the list. Those phrases that drive you bonkers?
haha. i dont hear “hit the ground running” all that often, actually. i cant think of one at the top of my head right now, but i know there are some out there that i dont like. 🙂
I think maybe it’s used only in Singapore offices…soo irritating…LOL
Going forward… at the end of the day…. new normal
By the way, I use “shiok” often because there isn’t an equivalent in English 😛
think I probably got annoyed with shiok cos my boss used to use that word all the time.
yeah those terms you mentioned are annoying to me too. Thanks for sharing Sam.
Hub
At the end of the day…
Bottom line is…
Whatever…
“s/he’s too old…”
oh yeah…I loathe the term ‘bottom line’ too & yeah end of the day and hub. Thanks for sharing 🙂
I think the singlish word most underrated and fit for globalization is “abuthen”. Im sure all you guys know what that means. Its sharp efficiency and teflon-coated sarcasm gives it the ability to cut through a chit-chat session while leaving everyone (ironically) giggling. Structurally, for some strange reason, I always think of it is a distant cousin of “albeit” – another word which i like very much – albeit seldom use. Hehehe.
Cannot
yeah….that I “can I help you” when I enter a store. I can’t even browse without what feels like bombardment, and zero personal space.
hehehe, i just posted re: singlish words i want to hear!
;-p guess since I’ve heard them repeatedly all my life, some phrases start to grate on my nerves. But yeah there are definitely loads I can’t do without. Often some Singlish or Hokkien words are just perfect to describe something or how at feel.
This has inspired me to do a post on those very words that pepper my language. Since I did an annoy list…maybe I should do one that’s more affectionate towards Singlish 😉
just checked, as I recall doing a post a long time ago about Singlish words that I use.
