Crazy Crowds at the New JCube Mall at Jurong East MRT (& My Directory Picks)

I feel embarrassed to say that I was one among the crowd at JCube. I really wanted to turn away from the madness.  If you drive you can’t get a lot here and have to also wait for one at the HDB multi-storey carpark nearby.  Best to take the train to Jurong East MRT, but I’d say wait at least a month for the crowds to die down.

My pick of the directory? – the skating rink.  Not as classy somehow as the one at Marina Bay Sands, but this one feels more like the real thing and it looks chilly, surrounded by glass.  It’s much bigger too. They say, Olympic sized. Skinny little girls were gliding about effortlessly on the ice. And FrancFranc which is not open yet. It’s said to be a popular Home and Living Store from Japan. Oh yes. Another not so common feature – an iMax theatre.

As usual most of the shops are what you see in all the malls, but there was a new Taiwanese restaurant with a great view of the skating rink. I was not prepared to queue and was already feeling stressed just by the sheer number of people constantly bumping into me.  But I reminded myself – I’m a self appointed part-time blogging mall spy, so this is the price if I want to get the scoop.  But the truth is, since I’m already here I might as well make the best of it and entertain myself. Even the photos can’t quite capture how overpopulated our malls are.

Oh yes Chili’s has a great view of the skating rink as well, but I’d rather go to the much cosier one at Tanglin Mall.  This one is just too open and it seems a bit smaller. Well, I guess it’s good that shops that were only in town, are now spread all over the island so that anywhere you stay, you won’t have to travel far to experience new dining options.  On the other hand, crowds will then swarm your quiet neighbourhood.

Oh yes, before I forget. At least there is a library and a bookstore here. It’s no Kino, but at least it’s not another Popular store where I find the selections quite dismal.

The grey exterior of the mall looks very dull. It would have been cooler if it really did look like an ice cube.

It’s a lot bigger than it looks and it impressed me a little bit, after I went in with low expectations.

I liked the cool pink dragon that was out for the mall opening. If you know me on Pinterest, you’ll know my love affair with all things pink.

The kids will find the live sized keyboard on the rooftop (aka the Tom Hanks movie Big) enticing.

The rest of the photos. Do you still feel like checking it out after seeing the crowds?

yeah we are really overpopulated…especially in the malls. Personally I prefer quiet places but the people around me like malls (to buy things)…

so since I am there, I blog 😉

Nice! I’ve been waiting ages for the ice-skating rink to be done! But it sure takes a lot of courage to be skating in front of so many people!

I tried it just once (years ago) and held on to the side rail soo hard, my arms ached so bad after. It felt like walking on soap. Do you ice skate Zoe?

I like the ice skating rink and would like to watch an iMax movie. I can’t skate but it gives me a feeling of space 🙂
