I just had to post this as my cousin has never tried this particular and most famous Hokkien Mee before and I’m sure she will love it. I’m just being cruel and tempting her because she’s not in Singapore right now and fried Hokkien Noodles is her favourite Singapore meal.
If you’re not familiar with hawker food (not about the presentation at all), this might just look like a hot mess to you. But to us in the know, it’s temptation on a major level. It’s the craving that does in whatever diet you’re on.
Yup it’s filled with lard. And yes, they used to serve it to you, but now they are so popular, you have to queue up and wait for it. What we had cost S$8 a plate (a plate of noodles that big is usually S$5 at most). But still really worth every cent because you can only have this artery clogging delight once in a while.
The stall is called Swee Guan Hokkien Mee named after the chef with the magic touch. He has been doing this for 30 years. Fried the traditional way, over a charcoal fire. A skill passed on from father to son.
The stall is only open at night at our Red Light District which is also one of our food havens and comes to life at night.
Tea was good on that cool night.
The full moon was out too. I much prefer a coffee shop to a hawker centre. Just feels cosier and I wish there were more of them.
A close-up view. Not for the faint-hearted. I always wonder, if you’re not local, does this gross you out? To me it looks pretty divine even though my photo taking skills suck. I did take a much better photo the last time I blogged about it. You can check out that post here.
even I am tempted to eat hokkien mee now!!! And I’m in Singapore.
I am re-tempting myself all over again 😉 Especially with the sweet memory of that last meal lingering. It was extra good because I had missed my lunch and was starving by then. Easily polished off that whole plate.
Now that I am in Singapore can we go next week? 🙂
Looks so tasty!!!
hehehe knew I could tempt you 🙂
