We decided to try this hokkien mee at 396 East Coast Road to see how it compares to the one in Geylang with the same name. The one I raved about recently. B tells me that it’s actually run by the brother of the famous stall in Geylang. They both learnt the method from their dad. The noodles are fried with a charcoal fire under the wok as well.
I won’t keep you in suspense. It’s good, but still does not reach the levels of perfection compared to the one at Geylang. Maybe the difference is very slight, but that’s how I feel. I would love to here from more readers about which one they prefer. It’s up for debate I guess. But this blog post reveals that I may have got the disciple and not the master, Alex. Which means, I have to give it another shot.
However, the service here is much better and so is the ambience of the newly renovated coffee shop. You don’t have to queue and you get served. So yeah, I would say it’s pretty good overall and I would come here again, maybe try out the takeaway.

No need to queue and you can have this at lunch time. The Geylang stall is only open at night.

I just had an issue with the bean sprouts which didn’t seem to have the ‘tails’ removed like at the other stall. But I don’t like bean sprouts. At the geylang one I hardly noticed the bean sprouts. Perhaps they add more here? B said I was imagining things, but he too thought the one located in Geylang had an edge.
It was nice and breezy in this coffeeshop.
As you can tell, I don’t really do fine dining on this blog as I don’t know much about it and it’s expensive. Hope you enjoy the hawker food posts by this non expert. Just based on what appeals to my taste-buds.
I actually like my Hokkien Mee a little wet and not dry.
Have you tried the Kim’s Hokkien Mee at Joo Chiat? Heard it is not bad. They sell crabs there too.
Oh yes, my uncles love the Kim’s Hokkien Mee.
