Duxton Hill: Nasi Lemak at Wok & Barrel

Lately I have been on a quest for nasi lemak. Hardly imagined that Nasi Lemak served at a fancy Cafe could trump some of what I’ve tried at various hawker centres. But I dare say it did. In a way it’s good to allay our fears that our hawker cuisine will die out. It’ll probably just get modernized by the younger generation, passionate about food and disillusioned by Corporate Politics? But of course I hope S$3 hawker meals in familiar settings will remain.

Apart from the salad (coleslaw) which I didn’t quite care for, I found it tasty. The rice was very well done. Not soggy at all, which is a complaint I often have. Either too soggy or not lemak enough.

My best praise is that I want to return for another plate soon. I appreciated the option of various side dishes. Both the cripsy pork and chicken were super yummy.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that these days it’s almost impossible to find nasi lemak with spicy chilli. This is more on the sweet side which people like my sister who can’t take any spice will appreciate.

The place was a bit hard to find for someone like me with no sense of direction, but thank goodness for google maps. Look out for number 13 at the top end of a long row of shophouses. Search for 13 Duxton Hill if you’re using your smart phone. Right across is the public carpark and I guess this is good if you’re in your business attire. You won’t break a sweat in this air-conditioned cafe.

And boy was lemonade quenching after that long walk in the thick air.

Here are some reviews I liked which articulate better what I couldn’t. More drool worthy photos too:

Just note that the cafe is closed on Mondays or you might get disappointed. You can check out their website for more information.
