Exploring Yong Siak Street at the Hip New Tiong Bahru

This is my second visit to Yong Siak Street. This time the restaurant Open Door Policy was open and so we had to try it. Will cover that in my next post. Since it was D’s first visit, we had fun browsing through the lovely things at Books Actually, Strangelets and new stores like Nana and Bird as well as Bhutan. Coming here seemed longer than walking back. That’s because even though we had google maps as a guide, we were a little bit disoriented at first when we got off at Tiong Bahru MRT Station. It might have been a pleasant walk if not for the cruel sun burning our faces, necks and ankles at every step. But yeah, that did not put us off. We would make a return visit in a heart beat.

Hope you like the photos we took along the way. Took quite a few so that we will be able to find our way back visually. The old low-rise white flats, trees and shophouses combined are really quite pretty. I felt myself very drawn to the area.

Wonderful selection of books, especially by local writers.

I loved that they even thought of adding stools so that you could sit and browse the books on the lower shelves. Very thoughtful indeed and it’s all these little details that make the difference.

That charming poster would be a lovely addition to a child’s room.

Brought back memories of the glasses we used to drink from as children. Lots of old glasses and other vintage Singapore things sold here that will bring on the nostalgia.

I could seriously spend hours here.

Not just a bookstore, lots of little trinkets too.

And just next to Books Actually is another fine store called Strangelets which sells unique designs.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to live upstairs?

We were charmed by the spiral stairway.

We almost missed Nana & Bird as it was tucked inside this old building, like a secret hideaway you read about in old children’s books. Inside were lovely dresses and purses for sale.

Just font alone can captivate me and is a reflection of taste.

Another little area which seemed like half design studio I think, where vintage restored chairs and decorative items were for sale. Loved the slanted doorway and even how it disoriented us slightly.

Inside a shop called Bhutan which sells products from the happiest place on earth. The scent within the store was lovely lemongrass which was also for sale.

Passed by the cactuses at Open Door Policy as we made our way back to the MRT.

A very charming estate indeed.

A walking map for your reference from Google Maps, although I now think Kim Tian road is more of a shaded way to go.

You can read about my very first visit here.
