Finally Checked out Tiong Bahru Bakery

The sea salt caramel laced pastry I had was interesting, but the bakery was just too packed for comfort when I was there. The same issue of seats being spaced too closely together and I’m someone who likes a bit of privacy when I’m chatting.  I also don’t want to inadvertently eavesdrop on another else’s conversation, but it’s getting so hard in Singapore with the space crunch and cafes squeezing as many patrons in as they can.

The iced latte I had was expensive at S$7 but I guess it was not dilute and really good actually. It was a hot day outside and thankfully the air-conditioning inside is strong enough unlike cafes like Forty Hands where it felt stuffy (love the coffee there though and still hope they get a bigger unit).

The almond croissant was strangely soggy and that’s the only word that comes to mind.

The baker from Paris who is at the helm of this cafe, kinda looks like a model don’t you think. I wonder if the tasks have now been delegated to a team. I kinda expected to be more wowed, as in, declare this is the best pastry I’ve ever had, but no.

The staff were very friendly and the service was good. At least my coffee was served to me and I didn’t have to wait at the counter like I did recently at Dean & Deluca.

I really liked the warm finishings. These days I tend to look out for cool features like the lamps.

The coffee wall was very cool.

It’s right next to The Orange Thimble which I have yet to try. And the bakery is under the same group that manages Forty Hands (no wonder the coffee is great) and Open Door Policy.

All the french living in Singapore is talking about the Tiong Bahru Bakery. In a few weeks time, it became kind of a myth. Now that the expectation are very high, I am wondering if I won t be disappointed if I go there. But I definitely should have a try….

So happy you saw this post Guillaume, cos I really wanted your opinion. Would love to hear what you think. I’ll probably trust your judgement more than all the reviews out there.

I think their stuff is over-rated. The croissants are blah and the pastries are doughy and pasty. Nothing to shout about.
