Grocery Shopping at Nex (NTUC and Cold Storage)

There are two competing supermarkets at the new Nex mall located next to Serangoon MRT. Competition is always good in my book if it means better prices and offerings for the customer.

NTUC is a subsidized supermarket with the lowest prices. NTUC Xtra is an attempt at creating a hypermart experience that includes fresh seafood, toys and electronics similar to what’s offered at the French hypermart Carrefour. There is already a branch of this at Ang Mo Kio Hub. Having seen the one at Ang Mo Kio hub I am still impressed at just how huge and spacious the one at Nex was.

Vegetarians please avert your eyes.  I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the live seafood like the shrimp, lobsters and crab.  Housewives will think that this is really good as they don’t have to go to the wet market for their fresh food needs.

Cold Storage was very small in comparison but the staff seemed a lot friendlier. There’s a wine section as well. I prefer small cosy places for grocery shopping, like this one. When it’s too big, I feel a bit lost.

Yummy canned Lychees.

I want this grocery trolley bag. It has special wheels that can go up stairs effortlessly.

I find that there are affordable things at Cold Storage if you buy the house brand which is called First Choice. The quality is darn good too.
