More About Singapore Actually

I often get bored in Singapore, which can seem too small, sterile and orderly to me. I get weary, as my country often feels like it lacks a soul.  I yearn for where the grass seems greener.

Starting a photo blog has made me look at this tiny island with new eyes. Blogging has made me a tourist in my own country. Honestly, it’s recharged my batteries. It’s makes me more aware and present. I start to appreciate little things that would have otherwise slipped my notice.

Mainly I focus on our food culture because it’s the saving grace of this place. In this high pressure environment, food takes the edge off. I can proudly declare that we have the best food in the world and I think Anthony Bourdain would not disagree. He has encountered our food crazy people and has said in an article on Singapore for the New York Times.

So it was another day in foodie paradise. And that is Singapore’s singular danger. It is easy to get sucked in, to get used to the little things on your daily table — the tiny dishes of sambal or chopped red chili peppers, the soy sauce, even the moist towelettes…..Western food becomes eerily bland and flat.

Before I travel I prefer to read blogs by ordinary people, rather than the usual commercially driven travel guides. I like to hear about a place, warts and all.  I don’t take very good photos, but I try my darndest.  I am akward and introverted, but blogging has this phenomenon of making me appear like an extrovert.  This is my space to talk about what Singapore is really like.

  1. Dear BJ,

I think the key in life, living, learning and loving is to try to find the positive aspect in any situation you are given. You say it’s orderly there. I live in a land where confusion reigns. I’d love a day where things worked. I’d love a day where I can get a straight answer to a straight question. Keep up your blogging. You’re doing a great job.

I definitely get what you mean! Blogging has helped me feel more involved and more part of Singapore, which has in turn make me feel much better about living in this country.

And food is awesome. Don’t ever stop eating. LOL

Hey Kristen…so nice to see you here. Yeah the food definitely keep me sane. To counter the humidity and crowds I need the carbs!

I have a really dumb question that I thought you might be able to help me with when you get a chance. It seems that everyone else has a link when they post a comment but I don’t think mine does. How do you make your comment so someone can click on your link if they want to? I hope that makes sense (I’m pretty new to the game!)

Hey Karen…thanks for coming by…..no worries i am pretty crappy at tech stuff too! I think you need to copy and paste your address in 🙂 There are 3 lines to fill when you do a post. One for name, one for email and one for site address i think.

under URL your website address is missing when you write to me…hope this helps

thank you for your lovely comments on my blog. I feel the same as you, that blogging has opened my eyes and really made me appreciate my home town, and helped me to have better experiences of the things we usually take for granted. Food is the greatest thing that we all have in common, no matter where we live in the world. That’s why I love reading and writing about it so much!

Reading your blog feels like coming home, even though Singapore was only my home for three years. Bless you for painting such a vivid “warts & all” picture of this beautiful country.

I am exactly the same. And ditto on checking out travel blogs written by real people who actually live whereever I want to go to.

I love food too, sometimes I wish just for a day my job is to try the bestest food in the world (but somehow still be skinny.. hahaha).. Good luck

I have the same problem with being this my city. After living here for so long I don’t think I can claim it as “my home, my city” because we’re still at the acquaintance kind of relationship. But i hope to change that soon by playing the role of the tourist.
