I really enjoyed these two books by Canadian Indian (Parsi) writer Rohinton Mistry. He is one writer who captures the element of nostalgia so brilliantly. The characters are so well drawn that you feel tenderness for them. I do hope he wins the Booker prize for A Fine Balance which is one of the best books I have read in a while. It covers Indian Politics during the Emergency in 1975 and how it affected the people, especially the poorest in society.
Family Matters in particular educated me on Parsi Zoroastrian life, customs, and religion. Few people know this – that Freddy Mercury of Queen was a Parsi boy whose birth name was Farrokh Bulsara and he was educated at boarding schools in Bombay.
