In my life there are certain events that have shocked me to the core. When I was a kid it was news about Princess Diana’s death (heart wrenching to think of her young boys) and later the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Now an author (Salman Rushdie won the Booker of Bookers) whose writing ability I am in awe of, has been violently and barbarically attacked (stabbed by a 24 year old) and I am hoping he pulls through & heals fully. My thoughts are with his children.
I have to say that I am most impressed actually by his non fiction writing. I dream of having even a fraction of that genious.
An extract of the horrific and deeply distressing news today on BBC:
Mr Rushdie was stabbed at least once in the neck and in the abdomen, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, by helicopter.
“Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” his agent said.
Update: 14 August 2022 Elated to hear some good news.
The Indian-born British novelist remains hospitalised with serious injuries, but fellow author Aatish Taseer tweeted on Saturday evening that he was “off the ventilator and talking (and joking)”. Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, confirmed that information without offering further details. (Source: The Guardian)
Even more good news (BBC & Twitter) and I feel relief for his sons.
