The Little India Station is on the purple line. It’s a real convenient way to visit this place that has been relatively untouched and that is why is it such a wonderful tourist attraction. It’s lovely to me as well. Today I noticed more closely the pretty Indian inspired artwork there, depicting cows, elephants and peacocks which are sacred animals in Hindu Culture.
I also saw peacock feathers being sold for decorative purposes at a Little India shop just outside the station. My partner asked me how the feathers are collected. I was sure they were shed and I checked it up. It’s true, the peacocks molt their feathers and these are then collected. This is usually in August after their mating season and they grow new plummage in Spring. The male birds are the pretty ones with the beautiful feathers which can can drop in just one day. I can imagine people in India running to collect them before they get spoilt by the rain or mud as these can be sold for a pretty penny. I just hope poachers don’t kill the birds for the feathers as this would be against the deep spirituality connected with the majestic bird.
The peacock feather is a symbol of protection and also symbolises the third eye for Hindus.
This is fantastic.
I hope poachers don’t do so either.
Nice idea collecting the feathers.
These birds are used to pulling the crowds, eh?
thank you so much!…I have seen peacock feathers sold in singapore and India all the time but I never really thought about the peacocks. I always assumed it was the shed feathers that were collected and I hope that is not abused by people out to make a profit.
I like peacock themed designs too…the colours from nature are always just fantastic. I’ve even seen cosmetics modelled on these shades 🙂
