Saw Crocodile Luc Lac at the lounge during the dinner buffet at the Sheraton Saigon. Luc Lac means to cook the small pieces of meat while tossing it in a wok or skillet.
Well I didn’t dare touch it first and went back to sit down. Then after a while, I thought it would be a pity if I didn’t try it at least. It seemed like a once in a lifetime thing. So I did.
It tasted like very tough chicken. Without the sign there, I would have thought it was chicken or fish. It seems that everything strange tastes a bit like chicken. Years ago my cousins dared me to taste Chinese style frogs legs. It tasted a bit like very soft chicken, but I was totally queasy about it. Just the thought of what I was eating totally puts me off. I would never in a million years be able to do something like Fear Factor or Survivor where you’re made to eat all those raw strange foods. I think it’s just our notions of what we are used to eating, in our particular ethnic groups.
This made me think of Karl Pilkington. He’s a mate of my comedy hero Ricky Gervais and here are his thoughts about food. He is famous now due to the show ‘An Idiot Abroad’ but I find that he is sometimes quite a genious and actually quite astute with his unique take on things. He sometimes just says it like it is. What we are all thinking but dare not put that bluntly into words for fear of being politically incorrect.
I ate alligator in New Orleans and agree. It’s a gamey version of chicken.
I also couldn’t ever do any show that required food adventurousness.
I tend to be super picky and finicky when it comes to food. When I love something I can eat it almost every day which my partner can’t quite understand as he likes variety.
