When you think Singapore you don’t normally imagine quiet, calm or serene. That’s why I love to seek these places out.
Places like Club Street and Ann Siang Hill.
You don’t need to spend a cent.
Just walk the streets and do a little urban exploring with your camera.
If you do want to have a meal, there are many lovely restaurants and I did try the coffee at Shots and I must say it was superior to any of the chains like Starbucks or Coffee Bean. Only wish it wasn’t so popular. It was the only place that was packed to the gills.
That’s the thing about Singapore. Because there are 5 million people milling about on a tiny island, once there’s something good, it’s discovered pretty quickly. Soon enough, through blogs or word of mouth, everyone seems to swarm there.
Especially if it’s new.
We love new.
There was this pizzeria which is famous for it’s pasta. Unfortunately they were not serving pasta that day as the chef wasn’t around, so we decided to try our luck the next time.
Will just do a chronological walk through. Loved the fushia at Stevie General Store. There’s a wonderful write-up at this blog.
The quirky store has some very pretty vintage dresses.
And this is Club Street. It has a similar vibe to Haji Street with quaint and quirky stores. Many tourists seem to like this place. There’s also the famous Maxwell Road hawker centre and a Buddhist temple nearby, so I guess it’s a good stop for tourist buses as well.
There was a charming little back alley here.
Here’s where we found the little drom store at 7 Ann Siang Hill. It’s an independant publisher and gallery store.
Actually Club Street and Ann Siang Hill are just these two streets here.
Noticed the charming old street lamps.
Loved the details on this brass lion door knocker. How majestic and appropriate as Singapore is the lion city after all.
The architecture here is amazing. Especially with all that colour. Red always does it for me.
Hope to return to Shots cafe one day. Still thinking about the coffee.
I just like taking in all the details. The old window shutters, remind me of lego windows. And the contrast of that shocking pink sign.
Love it!
The Italian restaurant from across the street. It’s famous by word of mouth. And that’s the best kind of fame.
A closer shot of Cugini Tratorria Pizzeria at 87 Club Street, and a fabulous review.
Another restaurant that tempted us with pulled pork burgers on the menu. Jerry’s BBQ and Grill at 92 Club Street. The fried chicken wings looks so good at this blog, I’m craving for them already.
Woods in the Books. I was totally charmed.
And this was just from the outside.
The Wood in the Books website alone will charm the socks off you and it’s blogas well..
This is my idea of a dream store. Something you thought you’d never find in Singapore.
Loved this old candy striped barbershop sign.
Looking down the beautiful corridor.
Saying bye for now.
I heard so much about Shots.. been wanting to go but I’m too lazy to venture outside of the East. I really should get out there and check out the places that you featured… They all look so lovely.
There are so many coffee places I want to try, but a lot of them are very small and crowded.
Cool latest post, bookjunkie. Thanks for sharing
have you been there too?
I haven’t been there but thanks to you, I would definitely visit this place in the near future.
That looks like a cute and fun day trip. I love that you are a constant tourist in your own country. That’s a wonderful life philosophy. I actually thought about doing a similar post and took my camera with me one day to a place I like but for some reason I never got the pix over to my blog. I think it’s because I blog more about other things. You never know though because people aren’t so simple.
Some days, we like one thing, another day another. Fickle! Ha! I do always enjoying clicking in here though. So Thank you!
Julie 🙂
I would just love to see a post of your surroundings…I think it would be a huge hit 🙂
I love Club Street and Ann Siang Street too. Haven’t really explored this place in the day time. If you have a chance, go at night too, it’s quite charming. I went to Shots once at night on a Friday. It was totally empty! The chocolate brownie is superb, you should try it!
seriously……thanks for the tip…I loved the coffee at all the boutique outlets and now the usual chain ones just won’t do. Wish I knew how to make my own….cheap.
Yes and Cugini is fantastic. I tried it once and I’m yearning to go back again!
now I really have to try to get there just to try it one time.
it’s like we went along Ann siang street wif u.
=)
so happy to have you come along 🙂
So glad you liked Woods in the Books. Isn’t it a delightful store? (P.S. Come out and say hello at http://notabilia.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/the-picture-book-as-art-object-a-panel-discussion-at-the-pigeonhole. We’ll be talking LOTS about picture books.)
